Admiral Twins Owners To Rebuild Drive-In

The Admiral Twin Drive-in, a Tulsa staple that boasted a landmark nine-story, all-wood screen tower before being destroyed by a fire in September 2010, will be rebuilt this summer. The news is a triumph for Tulsans, who rallied together to form a "Save Admiral Twin" initiative which raised $30,000 towards the rebuilding effort via t-shirt sales and website donations, all of which helped the owners get a reconstruction loan. Plans for the drive-in call for the tower to be constructed of steel this time and include a new concession stand and bathroom facilities with heating and air conditioning.

The drive-in opened in 1951 and has had a rich history within the community. In the 1980's, Francis Ford Coppola filmed part of The Outsiders at the drive-in. In 2001, the drive-in underwent a $100,000 renovation for its 50th anniversary and had been awarded a $35,000 makeover from the Save-A-Landmark contest sponsored by Hampton Hotels.
